Mastery Schools welcomes Serena Amos as Chief People Officer

Mastery Schools is proud to introduce Serena Amos as the network’s Chief People Officer (CPO). Serena is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in public education and human resources. She also brings specialized expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to the role.

As CPO, Serena will lead the Talent Team. She will work closely with the CEO, Cabinet, and Executive Team to build on the strengths of Mastery’s current talent model; ensure that the recruitment, screening, development, and compensation of our talent is a national exemplar; and intentionally nurture a healthy, inclusive organizational culture that supports long-term staff retention through systems, training, and personal leadership. A firm believer that access and opportunity are critically important indicators of student success, Serena is also an avid reader of the writings by E.D. Hirsch Jr.

“Our society cannot afford a two-tiered system in which the affluent have access to superior education while everyone else is subjected to a dull and incoherent classroom experience. Academic excellence, educational equity, and fairness demand a strong foundation of knowledge for all learners.” – E.D. Hirsch Jr.

Before joining Mastery, Serena served Pennsylvania students, families, and educators with roles in the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia, most recently as Director of Human Resources at William Penn Charter School. She also spent fifteen years with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District as a principal, academic superintendent, and deputy chief of human resources. She began her career as an elementary school teacher.

Serena earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cleveland State University. She also holds a TurnAround Leadership Institute certificate from Harvard University, a Diversity and Inclusion for HR certificate from Cornell University, and is a senior-level-certified professional in human resources (SPHR).

Please join us in warmly welcoming Serena as a member of the Mastery community.
