Talent, determination, and teamwork on display during fall athletics season

Mastery students have been busy on the field, court, and trails this fall, showcasing their talent, determination, and teamwork. From exciting soccer matches and football games to standout performances in cross country, volleyball, and more, our vision for athletics to enrich academic experiences and support the development of well-rounded leaders is being realized.

Here’s a recap of some of our favorite highlights from across the network:

  • Josiah Miller and Kevin Samson of Hardy Williams High qualified for the PIAA Cross Country meet after medaling in the District 12 Championships meet, and classmate and senior Wyleek Walker is being recruited to play college football by multiple schools.
  • Students from East Camden Middle displayed dedication and joy in their athletic pursuits. The school’s coed soccer team overcame transportation issues to finish their season strong, flag football athletes received praise from opposing coaches for their passion for the game, and cheerleaders even added on Sunday practices to hone their skills.
  • Flag football athletes from Lenfest Campus were crowned winners of the first-ever Mastery Bowl, beating nine other competitors for the title.
  • Keyshon Wingate of Gratz Prep Middle finished in the top 3 of 92 runners in the MPAA Cross Country competition, and classmate Paris Kelly came in 8th out of 89 competitors.
  • Led by senior La’ni Thompson and sophomore Jaslyn Flores, the girl’s volleyball team at Simon Gratz High School proved that they were a force to be reckoned with – ending their season 9-2 and receiving an invite to compete in the Public League Volleyball PIT tournament. Not to be outdone, Gratz’s football team secured the #1 seed going into the D12 Public League 3A playoffs and celebrated Tray Parsons breaking the school’s single-season touchdown record. Next up? The Bulldogs hope to add a Public League 3A Championship to their resumes.
  • Haja Jalloh and Dakotah Randolph had stand-out seasons on Harrity Elementary’s cross country team. According to coaches, Jalloh displayed perseverance and grit, ultimately shaving almost five minutes off her baseline race time – a remarkable feat that inspired her teammates. Randolph was described as the personification of Mastery’s one team value – focused on improving his own performance and encouraging others to succeed – making him a respected figure on the team.
  • Coaches at Cleveland Elementary worked together to create the school’s first flag football team this year – and the results were incredible. The newly-formed team made it to the championship game, walked away with only two losses overall, and ended the season excited about the future.
  • Cramer Hill’s entire cross country team excelled in the Rothman 8k race. Special shout-outs go to Fernando Guevara, who took 4th place in the 14 and under group, Josiah Walker, who earned 2nd place in the 12 and under section, and coaches Melissa Love and Reese Hart for encouraging students to push their limits and supporting them to achieve their goals. Speaking of excellent coaches, Andrew George led the boy’s soccer team in another successful season, where they endured only one loss. Eighth graders who helped achieve this exciting outcome include Fernando Guevara, Enmanuel Villar, Osvaldo Gonzalez, Justin Moreno, Gavin Rodriguez, Jeramyah Rivera, Xavier Marte Polo, and Vlarin Casilla Vargas.

We are so proud of the student-athletes mentioned here and many more from across the network who exemplify Mastery values on and off the field. To learn more about Mastery’s robust athletic programming, visit our Athletics page.
