Phila Public Charters Stand United in Opposition to School District Policy 406

Charter school leaders, parents, and students gathered outside of The School District of Philadelphia this morning to publically express their opposition to charter amendment Policy 406. The policy seizes charter school independence and innovation, violates the PA charter school law, and adds additional bureaucracy to charter schools, making it harder for us to serve children. This policy, if enacted, impacts 84 charter schools and 70,000 students in Philadelphia.

Over 65 charter schools signed on to a letter to the SRC with two requests:

  1. Table Policy 406 and form a working group to work collaboratively with the Charter community to update the charter amendment policy.
  2. Instruct the Charter Schools Office to negotiate fair charter renewal agreements for the 17 schools that are still waiting – this includes Shoemaker, Gratz, Pickett, Clymer and Cleveland.
