Mastery Schools, CHOP expose students to healthcare careers through enriching field trips

Students from Hardy Williams High visited a state-of-the-art Services and Logistics Center (SLC) thanks to an innovative partnership between Mastery Schools and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, funded by a nearly $20-million investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies, that will train students for in-demand healthcare careers.

During the visit, students toured CHOP’s facility and gained firsthand insight into the complex logistics in areas such as supply chain management and medical equipment sterilization that ensure efficient patient care and promote patient safety.  They also spoke with industry experts and participated in professional development sessions focused on career readiness. “I had a blast. Like top tier. It was great,” said Hardy Williams High twelfth grader Madison Regusters-Brown. “We learned about sterilization, we got to walk through a warehouse, it was fun. We talked about a lot of personal things. I feel like I connected with everyone in that room. It was amazing. It was a really great time and I had so much fun.”

In school year 2025-2026, Hardy Williams High will relaunch as a healthcare-focused high school – , empowering students to choose between three healthcare career pathways, including clinical care, hospital operations, and healthcare administration. This trip to the SLC gave students an inside look at potential careers in the hospital operations pathway and provided them the opportunity to learn about the importance of each job within the healthcare system.
