Juniors and seniors at Mastery High School of Camden are using the “Career Pathway/Workforce Development” program to get the education and skills they need to land a job before they graduate.
Students at the renaissance school participate in the program beginning as sophomores, when they receive preliminary college and career readiness exposure. In their junior years, students take the SAT and go on trips to various post-secondary educational institutions. They also receive information from community partners, including city and regional leaders in fields such as the military, municipal authority operations, auto repair, home health care, hospital care, construction, and cosmetology.
They are also “introduced to workforce development soft skills, such as work ethics, interviews and resume building,” said Ana Ramirez, the school’s career pathway advisor. “We answer questions such as ‘What is a cover letter?’ ‘Why is it important to get to work on time?’ ”
