Editor’s Note: This article is part of a series sponsored by the Camden Education Fund about remarkable students of the Class of 2025 from some of the city’s high schools.

Journee Davis was involved in many cross country, volleyball, basketball and flag football events during her time at Mastery High School, but said few brought the level of excitement that one which occurred when she caught a key pass during a West Jersey Football League championship game her senior year in that last sport did.

“We were in overtime, and it was a make-it or go-home type of play,” Davis described to a TAPinto Camden reporter. “The year prior, we made it to the championship, but we lost in the semifinals… so my catching (the touchdown) it was like, ‘Oh my gosh. We made it!’”

According to Davis, her athletic prowess also yielded another benefit.

“While l made friends and I was always really into class and really engaged, I was a shy girl,” Davis said. “With sports, I had to interact with my team and so I had to make a big change. (Sports) turned me into a person who wanted to speak out, who wanted to be involved, who wanted to get to know things.”
