Harrity Elementary sees attendance and academic gains with new program

Harrity Elementary has launched an innovative initiative aimed at transforming school culture and enhancing student achievement through the implementation of the Ron Clark Academy House System. This program is designed to create a positive school culture that fosters a sense of belonging, community, and healthy competition among students

To prepare for the program’s implementation, Harrity’s leadership team traveled to the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2024. There, they observed the House System in action and learned strategies for building community, enhancing academic outcomes, increasing family academic partnerships, and providing robust mental health support to students and staff.

As part of the initiative, every student and staff member will be assigned to a House to create a sense of belonging and collaboration. Student involvement, both inside and outside the classroom, will contribute to overall House points, allowing students to work toward a team goal. The program’s initial rollout has focused on middle school students, with elementary school students expected to select their houses in the 2025-2026 school year.

Although the program is new, it has already yielded impressive results. Leaders report that attendance has soared above 75% for the first time in five years, and academic performance has improved. Notably, data from the second reporting period shows students have increased proficiency in science, math, and reading.

Harrity Principal Dr. Ayo Akinmoladun notes that the program has significantly increased staff morale and family engagement. Staff members report feeling more connected to the school community, which has resulted in high staff attendance rates and a greater sense of joy throughout the school community. Among parents, the school has seen increased engagement from middle school parents.

The program’s success is a testament to the power of innovation and collaboration in education. By fostering a sense of belonging, community, and healthy competition, Harrity Elementary is transforming the school culture and empowering students to succeed and pursue their dreams after graduation.
