Blog: Master Teacher Spotlight on Jared Moskowitz

Growing up in Cherry Hill, NJ, Jared was always surrounded by music. Gifted with perfect pitch, he was just three years old when he hopped up and repeated everything that his mother had been playing on the piano – note for note. Jared taught music lessons in high school, and majored in music composition in college.

Jared Moskowitz came to Mastery with 9 years of teaching in NJ public schools under his belt in 2010. Expecting to stay at Shoemaker teaching music for only 2 years, it is now 8 years later – with many competitions won and sold out performances – yet Jared says “my job here isn’t finished”.

Shoemaker did their first ever full scale Broadway musical 3 years ago, performing Once on this Island and selling out all three shows! Students were working all hours for 5 months; after-school, weekends, and during lunch. With over 100 students involved, they built the set, ran lighting and sound, acted as stage managers and created props and costumes. “The level of dedication on their part was huge,” said Moskowitz.

The Mastery Chorus at Shoemaker is a full-year elective that Jared piloted in 2011. Students audition in June and begin the first day in August when they return from summer break. They’ve won 1st place for best choir three times in a row at Music in the Parks yearly competition!

Jared’s hope for the music program at Shoemaker is to create a tradition to produce a full scale musical every year, for students to continue working collectively and for it to be a piece of pride that is shared throughout the school.
