Mastery Schools of Camden Posts Academic Gains

Mastery Schools of Camden students have made significant academic gains. Math proficiency has doubled since last year, from 9% to 18% and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency grew five percentage points from 16% to 21%. Compare that to proficiency rates for the Camden City School District which are 9% for math and 15% for ELA.

Three Mastery schools – East Camden Middle, Cramer Hill Elementary and Molina (Upper) Elementary – are among the top ten schools overall for ELA proficiency (grades 3-8). Those three schools, along with Mastery McGraw Elementary, are also in the top ten schools for math proficiency (grades 3-8).

“I am incredibly proud of the gains all of our students are making, especially at McGraw, Molina and East Camden Middle,” said Mastery Schools CEO Scott Gordon. “All three were low-performing district schools before we started operating them in 2015. To see them now in the top ten for ELA and/or math proves that our students can succeed with the support of loving teachers and families who have high expectations and believe in them. There is still a lot more work to be done to close the achievement gap, but these standardized test results prove that we are well on the way.”

Mastery Schools of Camden are renaissance schools, a unique charter-district hybrid. The schools are independent, like charters, but enrollment is based on neighborhood preference, like district schools.

25% of Mastery students in Camden receive special education services and 16% are English language learners, both numbers higher than the traditional school district.
